During the small hours , the sea becomes more restless. 1st time I feel choppy waves. Smell the salt and hear thunder. Rain.

Carpentry station: sitting with a sailor preparing a wedge or something

Lieutenant helped build the ship. Story of the ship – commissioned about a year ago in Magnimar - the purpose is to be an exploration and maneuverable combat vessel. bigger than it looks, lower decks wider than top decks. Goes through the basic tools – sand paper, chissel, turners, adze, planes. Sailor sitting there "Marvin" an able seaman and apprentinve carpenter – he helps me construct small pieces. Spend the whole morning and early afternoon. 

Ship – "Aurora". Figurehead of the ship – beautiful woman with angelic wings, huge hammer, scales. Metallic halo.

Wealday – noon

Pouch – 115gp  and Adventuring stuff – go down to the docks. 

Topsail standing above all the others. Mighty galleon – darkwood hull illustrated with gold leaf and etched signs – beautiful white sails. 2 decks above water! Being filled continuously – multiple planks. 

Mogrim – shocked by my skin/hair transformation. Enter the bowles of the ship – tiny cabin – hammock. Setting sail tomorrow morning – don't spend all day here but get to know the people on board. I'm the only woman. Sail tomorrow – 6am. Room contains – tiny desk, tiny bed, tiny chest. Some sailor's sleeping quarters, My room is one of four at the very bakc of the ship. The resk of my deck is empty except for 8 ballistas and 3 harpoon guns. Top deck – captain's quarters directly above me. Abvoe that the wheel. Very front of the top deck -

Beneath deck is mainly cargo – lots of lumber, food, crates. Animals – horses, chickens, pigs, lambs – at least 3 cats. 

 Librarian of Pathfinder's lodge – sells some books there. 

Each deck has two ways up and 2 ways down.

Mogrim – waiting until we were at sea until he told me more. Crossing Aroden's arch, to the Morden Spire to resupply. From There we'll set sail for the long journey to Arcadia. Western most continent. Making landfall to a location called "Dawnflower Bay" were we'll build a new pathfinder lodge – the first known transial arcadian lodge. It;ll take about 25 days to reach morden's spire. Suggests I start learning from the sailors – Boatswain Marcus will be the one to give you a hand. Marcus is a short human -reminds you of Adril in his smile. brown hair in dreadlocks – canvas shirt and strong leather trousers. Short boots. Scrub the deck with salt water and water treatment.  Dinner in the officer's mess.

<u>Sunday Night.</u>

Guests arrive – Kyra, Ezran. Ezran's father had some serious issues with creating a cult within his religion – he was jailed and lost everything. Ezran spent lots of time trying to clear his father's name, only to find out that he was guilty all along.

Daddy breaks out a very fine bottle in a blue-green, shiny, iridescent glass, ribbed and in a basket of straw at the bottom. Sip – see shiny stars and fireworks around me. "Fey Wine". 

Lini is doing well. Went to the pathfinder's society – she met a shamen and went on a crazy drug trip.

Door slams open – wearing silver/gold metallic armour – symbol of Shelyn. Long white hai, blue eyes, but also little horns. Lord Ashborn "Nilluvian sent all the info and we're ready to set sail whenever you want. I would suggest that we leave in no more than two days."

We live in an era when the promises made and the prophecies that were told bear no meaning. People consider this to be a curse – I choose to see it as an opportunity.

Hold out the compass and the prism. A way finder and an ioun stone – a different kind of ioun stone (10,000 GP worth!). It's known to enhance your physical or mental aptitude – kind of a pact with the stone. You have to spin it or put it in your wayfinder – then tell it what you want to be gifted to you. Resonant power.

What happens next? I go home, relax. Tomorrow afternoon go find him at the docks at the ship, put my stuff in the cabin and get to know the ship.

Try to open the book. Middle of sun and longsword, there's the end of a pin. My blood opens it.

As I open the cover, the whole room is blanked with white light – completely blinds me.You hear from far away the sound of trumpets – at the same time feel burning on my back and then I loose consciousness. 

I wake up a few hours late – I passed out on the book (and drooled on it a bit). The book is the holy text of Iomedae.

"My dearest one, I am grateful that you have accepted my offer and my blessing. From this point onwards we walk together. To serve those who need, to protect those in need. For now, and for ever."

First pages are the commandments of Iomedae – the Tennants and Affirmations. Stories speak to me in a way I wasn't expecting.

There is a story I'm going to tell you. It's a story your borther's don't know – Ishould't even know.

My mother was beautiful, smart, wise. She was part of a great convoluted story – much to do with the fate of our world. My mother and others sacrifieced themselves to that I and some others can live. The battle was lost in her time. She came back. She is in the world, two years older than me, and doesn't know about me yet. There were six other people who came back with her through a gate in Osirion. My mother used to be a human who was born in Aelyssos, died and was made an angel by Iomedae. She followed her will, failed, and then came back to make me. I am supposed to save a very important person who is fighting for the sake of the world. I can recognise the others, or at least their progeny, by the amulet like mine. 

Chrystovalantis left because he overhead a conversation with my mother. 

I need protection… he goes opens a huge secret corridor, Filled with paintings of my brothers, father, city. Case 2m high – an armour. Plate armour with sign of Iomedae – leaves space for wings.

The Fallen Fortress: There and back again

13th Kythona 4711, Oathday
Noon, somewhere in the Cairnlands

Dear Diary,

it's been extremely exciting leaving the city. Walking out of those gates, I felt suddenly giddy, as if the road might rush out beneath my feet and lead me anywhere – maybe west to Diobel, or even across the sea to Taldor or Andoran. I'll admit that, foot-sore and tired a few hours later, I rather wished that the road would carry me to where we're going. We've stopped for a brief rest and some water, which has given me the chance to write a little. The countryside around Absalom city is hot and dry, and the grass is yellowed. The road is strewn with the debris of troubled times – rotted leather and rusted armor bear witness to all the assaults on Absalom staged from these plains.

I left a note for my family on my bed explaining that I was "off for an adventure. I'll be back on Sunday." I didn't want to get into a 'discussion' with my Dad about this. I'm sure he'll be fine…

I hope he doesn't freak out…

Night, Cairnthorpe Village Hall, Island of Kortos. 

We didn't see anyone else on the road except a patrol of the Eagle Guard, scouting the extended lands around Absalom for trouble. They warned us of some "aggressive individuals" in the area, but nothing else. You can see the Fallen Fortress – that's what the villagers of Cairnthorpe call it – from the road. It's up a hill, and looks rather forbidding.

Cairnthorpe itself is a quiet little village, organized round a village green, and with a large hall in the middle. The people here are jolly and chatty – there seem to about about 10 extended family groups with members of all ages. They were very happy and appreciative when I gave them a song. 

The village is run by a sheriff, Gilmore Farsword. He seems sensible and agreeable enough, and gave us his hospitality in exchange for a small potion from Lini which will, apparently, solve a rather embarrassing problem for him in his trouserly regions. His father, Sir Gilmott Farsword, is the lord of this and several other villages in the area. 

We heard word from the villagers that Ballanar had come through the village 2 days earlier, before heading up to the Fallen Fortress. Two days seems a long time if he's wounded. If there is something nefarious in the fortress, we may be looking for a body. On the other hand, maybe the thing is long abandoned, and instead he's been preoccupied catagorising the architecture and sketching out the murals.

Tomorrow'll be a long and exciting one (my first mission!), so I guess I'd best go to bed.

14th Kythona 4711, Fireday
Dusk, Cairnthorpe Village Hall, Isle of Kortos

Dear Diary,

this day has all been higglety-pigglety - good and bad, and difficult and SO AWESOME! I woke up with Drugami licking my face (that wasn't so bad) and in no time at all, we had breakfast (berry porridge – still not too bad) and were off. 

The Fallen Fortress is a beautifully masoned quatrefoil tower without external doors or windows, crafted from white, local stone. At least it used to be – the eastern room on the ground floor has largely collapsed due to recent earthquake activity, which gives us an entrance in. In fact, the damage extends minimally up to the floors above on the eastern side, and only the topmost level, 80 feet up, is unscathed. 

However, we had only just approached it when 3 ravenous wild dogs emerged from the shadows behind the tower, prowling and circling. Fortunately we managed to dispatch 2 of them, and the other ran away in fright. 

That wasn't the only rude shock. As we walked through the ground floor rooms, we approached enormous cobwebs, from which scuttled a man-sized spider. The damn thing stuck me to the floor with its web, and it was only with Kyra's help that I managed to get free. I was very happy when I finally dispatched the horrible creature. The other rooms of the ground floor are, at the time of writing, empty, and the west room is also partially collapsed and filled with rubble and debris.

A winding staircase leads to the first floor, but no sooner had we stepped into the west room than a foul smell (we're talking rotton eggs combined with open sewer) washed over us, making us all feel sick: Troglodytes – from the Darklands. I'd read about them, but I wasn't ready for how disgusting they smelled – or looked! They're like fishy snakes, and they were brandishing spears. They attacked and were very unreasonable, but we finally managed to get rid of them.

The other thing to note about this tower is that there are traps in several of the doors. Like the one I tried to open next. Traps like large, spring-loaded javelins. Javelins which can easily impale your shoulder. I'm damn lucky that Kyra was there to patch me up with the power of Sarenrae (a goddess who, by the way, is growing on me increasingly as the hours pass).

The south room was abandoned – nothing but a fine layer of dust – but the east room, which was quite destroyed, was collapsed in such a way that it was possible to climb up to the second floor. 

The final room on the first floor, the north room, was clearly once a store room. At what point, and for what reason, it was decided that an electrocuting lizard should be stored there is beyond me, but it fried the crap out of me before we managed to put the thing down. Savraiki souvlaiki…

We tried climbing up the staircase, but the door to the 2nd floor was locked. Of course, we could have just kept climbing, and checked for a door which was open, but we were trying to avoid being surrounded from above and beneath, in a tower that seemed marginally more densely occupied than the Red Hook on a Fireday night. Bruised and battered, we climbed up the tumbled-down wall onto the 2nd level. The north and east rooms were filled with the strong smell of ammonia and the ceiling moved like a living fabric. And that was when the bats attacked. Maybe I should note that these bat-stards had red eyes and seemed hungry for blood. We're not talking cute-mice-with-wings here. We're talking bat-outta-hell…

If anyone ever reads this, they might be curious to know quite how difficult it is to attack a bat with a rapier. It's like trying to stab a fart. I ran to the walls and searched for some kind of door, but couldn't find anything. At last, the Bat-stards dissipated and flew off.

At this point, it became clear that we couldn't make any more headway without some kind of locks expert. It's a shame they didn't teach that at the Young Ladies' Finishing School in Absalom – life there would have been so much more fun with access to Madame Mignon's liquor cabinet. We reluctantly headed back to the village to look for a locksmith. The cheery sheriff pointed us towards the blacksmith, an elderly but muscular man (who seems well beyond his 60th year) by the name of Killian. 

Killian is scarred, experienced and capable. He's good with locks, by all accounts. But he's more jaded than a Tian ornament, and about as sociable. After agreeing on a price (5gp per lock) we set back off to the Fallen Fortress. We ascended back up the ground we'd already covered (Killian recognized the Troglodytes by smell alone, and we found out later that he used to be a famous adventurer) and soon we were in the chamber where the bats had been. Killian found a secret door without difficulty, and picked the lock.

The door opened up into a double room of the south and east portions of the tower. Even as we took the room in, two flaming skeletons attacked us. Kyra obliterated them – it was terrifying and amazing to watch. Once we could examine the room, we realized that it's a temple to Nithis, with blessings snaking along the walls in Draconic. There are two altars at the poles of the room – one black and one white – and two charred troglodytes on the floor. It seems like they came later and had nothing to do with the original purpose of the tower, since they didn't know the dangers of this room. The flaming skeletons were probably just protecting the altars.

Having written that, I almost feel bad about the fact that we took the silver altar services (about 200gp, I'd say), 2 silver holy symbols of Nithis, and 2 magical scrolls from the altars. Let's hope that Nithis is the forgiving sort…

We ascended the stairs to the third level, and found yet more stinking troglodytes. These ones, though, appeared to have brought an enormous friend, a six-foot troglodyte momma with a large club. The big one, once I felled it (it was pretty awesome – I rushed up to it, made a leaping lunge, and sent it crashing to the ground) yielded a pair of keys. Those opened up a chest and a cell, in which there was a manacled, prone human – Ballanar. It's almost a shame I found him – his rapier is way nicer than mine and I was rather tempted to keep it…

The fourth and final floor is a single, large room, dimly lit with daylight, but straight away I could see the last troglodyte - bigger than the others and with an albino crocodile at his side – staring out the window towards Absalom. Making eyes at my city.

The fight was messy and long – we were all hurt, and the damn creature kept conjuring extra monsters to fight for him – yet more bats and even a giant centipede, which seemed unnecessary. At last we brought him to his knees. By this point, I don't mind admitting, I was a little testy – tired and injured. It seemed like a long walk home, and Killian disappeared as soon as we'd paid him for his work (I added a 20% tip, even though he'd done nothing to help with the fighting – hopefully he'll remember that if we're ever passing this way). It's worth noting here that Ballanar said the tower is on an entrance to the Underdark, hence the Troglydytes. Ugh – even the thought of that gives me the shivers.

I definitely feel better for having had a bath, though, and washed the blood out of my hair and off my armour. Ballanar Forsend - that's the bard's full name – managed to find a few other bits and pieces – like a beautiful shield emblazoned with a leaping dolphin and a banner emblazoned with a phoenix. The Phoenix Banner is an item of particular cultural significance – it denotes a famous hunting lodge from the Age of Blades, and Ezran's commissioner should have a field day with it. That works out fine, as we can split the rest of the finds between us. But that's thought for tomorrow. It's time for food and wine. Particularly wine, I think…

Morning, Cairnthorpe Village Hall, Isle of Kortos

Dear Diary,

perhaps I drank more than was strictly necessary last night, but I'm feeling alright this morning. That's a sure sign that I didn't overdo it too badly. It was interesting talking with Ballanar last night. He's from the Coins Quarter in Absalom – grew up there, though his mom walked out on him and his dad when he was a kid. That seems heartless – the worst way to lose a parent. 

We discussed more about the Underdark – the first level is called "Nar-voth". Ballanar has been training as a Pathfinder for 4 years – he looks like he's in his early 20s, maybe 5 years older than me, with a typical Absalom complexion – brown eyes, brown hair, fair skin. He's well built, enough, and definitely not bad looking, particularly once the food and wine were flowing. But I don't think I'm his type some how. He didn't make a move, I mean. Honestly, we were so tired, I guess neither of us could keep our eyes open in any case.

Noon, the Cairnlands outside Absalom, Isle of Kortos

We're about half way back to Absalom, but we're walking slowly  - everyone's feeling a bit tired and battered still after yesterday. So, we stopped for a bit of lunch, and I've been trying to sort out the distribution of stuff from the fortress. Ballanar forfeited his portion, as he says that saving him from the Troglodytes was enough. I still can't figure out exactly why they were holding him captive (unless they planned to eat him), but it's fortunate that they did. Anyway, Ezran's done a little research on the magical items and I've appraised the non-magical ones (just like my dear Daddy taught me) so this is how it stands. Because of Dad's golden rule "you can only sell it second hand for half its worth" I've used the opportunity to buy items from the party at a reduced rate. That way, I get the benefit of the second-hand exchange prices, rather than some nameless weapons-shop in the alleys.

Night, the Angelou Estate, The Docklands Quarter, Absalom

So when I got home, Dad was sitting by the door. Literally sitting by the door. Seems like the poor guy has been out of his mind with worry. In a way, that's stupid – I mean, I can handle myself, and I wouldn't go into something over my head. But, I do understand. He loves me, and he wants me to be safe – even though this thing I want to do is by no means safe.

We chatted for a long time, and again over dinner. He does seem genuinely proud of me, under all the fear. He was talking me up to my brothers. And Giorgos says he might know a locksmith, which would mean that i could get into Mom's chest. I must remember to set him up with Kyra, too…

I'll think about all that tomorrow, though. I took a bath before dinner and I'm half blue, not to mention the fact that I think I've a cracked rib from one of those unwieldy clubs. Damn, adventuring is hard! But it's well worth it, in my opinion…

Meet the guys, leave the city.

Arrive in the Cairnlands by midday. Hot! With a warm salty wind. Yellowed grass. Movement in the lower grasses far away. Road is scattered with discarded armour and shields, going mouldy or rusting away.

After 8 hours, Hamlet – 5 horsemen and three people on foot leaving the village and approaching us. Eagle guard – city militia – advanced scouts of the city. 

Can see the crumbling tower already. 

Cairnthorpe. Sightings of aggressive individuals in the area. Village green. Village hall – wide, young individual in a throne-like chair. We can stay in the hall. Offered something in exchange. Lini and Drugami come into the hall. People seem jolly, chatty, talkative – people are all ages. 10 distinct groups of people – families or extended families. 

Ballanar – came by 2 days ago. Fallen Fortress. Lord of the Village – Gilmore Farsword, Sheriff of Cairnthorpe.

Fireday – Kythona 14th

Something wet on my face. Drugami – scroffly loving. Wash.

Fallen fortress – no doors or windows. Quadrofoil tower. Eastern wing has largely collapsed. Topmost level only seems whole. The Eastern portion hangs precariously over the mountain. At ground level an open whole is evident. Tower – 80 feet tall, masonry is of very high quality. Stones are white and around a foot square, and fit together closely. Local stone. 

Growling sound of dogs approaching

Shodows at the back fo the tower. 3 ravenous wild dogs appraoch – prowling and circling. 

15 feet high – 2nd floor. Cobwebs everywhere – single archway stands open in the SW shaft. Spider the size of the man – funnel shaped men. 

Winding staircase:

West room: Weapons racks – foul smell (rotton eggs combine with open sewer). Horrendous terrifying creatures – serpent-like fish holding big spears with scaly armour natural all over their body. Troglodytes – from the Darklands. 

South Octagonal room – fine layer of dust. Abandoned. 

East Broken room – could climb up this way.

North: Octagonal room – store room (cells lining the walls). Crack in the northern wal has let in rain water, large puddles. Large lizard eagerly approaching me (S creature). Electric!

North room – ammonia – living fabric. BATS

Western Room – Crude bunks, Troglydyte smell. Lit with torches. Three Troglydyte guards. Key chain with 2 keys. 

Southern Room – brazier - 

East Room – human tied with manacles and gagged. Ballanar. 

<u>4th Level</u>

Dimly lit with daylight. One large room composed of all 4 quadrafoils. Red carpet. 

Troglydyte bigger than the others. Carrying a massive staff with a bone skull shape on the top. He seems to be looking towards Absalom with longing eyes. An albino cave crocodile.

Preparation for my first big adventure

Dear Diary,

it's been an incredibly lucky and excellent day today! I headed out to the library to continue my research on survival techniques and basic adventuring know-how and came across a lovely woman called Kyra. Well, by "came across" I mean that she almost walked into me when I was searching for a book on a high shelf, and I had to do some kind of crazy leap to avoid her crashing into me. The book I was searching for discusses the items which Pathfinders and other adventurers use for their work and travels, and Kyra said that she was also aiming to use that book. I recognized a like spirit and interests, particularly as she was reading "Absalom's Cairnlands" which was next on my list! Anyway, she's very pretty – from Quadira, so with tanned skin and a fetching yellow turban – and she's very nice and interesting. 

After the library closed early (another private function – I can't believe how much money they make off those things)  we headed to the Katapeshi coffee house round the corner. They really do have the best spiced coffee, and their small nut biscuits are amazing. Kyra felt right at home, she said, so that's a good thing. 

We got talking – turns out that she left Quadira because her whole family was attacked and killed, though she didn't go into details, obviously. She follows Sarenrae - "the Dawn flower" as she calls her. She told me about a small expedition she is going on soon with a mage called Esran, along with another girl called Lini (who has a big white snow leopard called Drugami), and is from the Land of the Limnore Kings. A "cultural treasures appropriator" has given them a job to explore a tower in the Cairnlands, which has become accessible due to damage fom the recent earthquakes. 

I went along with Kyra to the Red Hook to meet these people. It fitted in well with my plans anyway, since I had been planning to see Adril Hestran about the Cairnlands in any case.

Esran is a middle-aged man with tiny reading spectacles. When I appeared he almost choked on his pipe by accident, and he was reading a book. Lini, on the other hand, is tiny and golden faced with bright green hair. She is definitely not human, but more than that I can't say. Her big cat, Drugami, ensured that there was some space around the table.

Esran was rather dubious about taking me on for the expedition, even though I don't want paying, I'm charming, I speak 4 languages, and I'm not bad with a rapier. Kyra spoke up on my behalf – said that I'm good at research. The real clincher came, though, when Adril sauntered up. I started asking him about the Cairnlands and he told me that he's managed to lose a student out there somewhere – a bard called Ballanar whose confirmation assignment, actually, was to explore and document the very tower we're heading for. Adril handed over a map (from his sweaty balls – he really needs to stop storing things there, but I guess that at least it's thief-proof!), which I promptly gave to Ezren. That's why I'm useful, I told him. He seemed convinced because we're set to leave in two days. 

From the map, it'll take about 7-8 hours to reach the closest farmstead to the tower, at which point we'll probably want to stop, and make the further hour and a half journey to the tower itself the next day. That means that we'll be traveling on Oathday and arrive on Fireday. 

In other news, my Mother's chest seems to be completely un-openable. I tried everything I could, but nothing seems to work. I'm loath to take more physical action in case there's a tampering trap (I've read about these in some of the delving books) or I break what's inside. 

So, on the whole, a good day. Far better that I have people to go out with, and something specific to do on a dry run, than that I just go sleep in the shadow of a ruin for a night and head home the next day (my original plan). If this really is a Pathfinder confirmation task, and I document my finds well, maybe I might even make some headway into earning a field commission. It would be nice, at least, to feel like I'd paid Captain Mogrim back for all of his kindnesses the other day.

12th Kythona 4711, Wealday

Dear Diary,

I've invited Esran and the girls round tonight night for a drink, and I'm hoping that he might be able tot help with the chest as well. At the very least, it should be a good chance to get to know each other better before we head off into the unknown – the unknown to me, at any rate. 

I've been reflecting on what Kyra said – that I didn't know anything about the world, or about suffering, because I've lived my whole life protected by walls. It caused me to stop and think about whether I'm ungrateful or not. But I don't think that I am. I can't help the way I feel, the desperation I have to see the world. I'm grateful for the calm and safe life I grew up with, but that doesn't mean that I have to be chained to it. Her aims of vanquishing evil are, of course, altruistic and noble. Perhaps my quest for secrets and knowledge and adventure are, by comparison, frivolous. But everyone recently has been asking me what I want, and that's what it is. I can't deny it to myself, even if I'm not yet ready to share it with other people. 

So, my agenda today involves shopping for supplies and gear, a quick library trip, and dinner with the family. Then Ezran and the girls should be coming by and hopefully I can finally get into that chest which has eluded me this far!

A fairly successful shopping trip! I bought some survival gear I'd read about at the library, as well as some scriveners' equipment for recording our finds and some supplies. I also bought one <u>incredibly expensive</u> healing potion. I'm hoping that I don't have to use it, but I read that it's good to have such a thing, just in case. 

I'm in the library now. I did a final, quick check of the survival books, just to see it there's anything I've forgotten, but I didn't see anything obvious. I've done a quick overview of the history of Absalom too – and particularly the history of those who tried to invade it – in an effort to narrow down the provenance of the tower we're headed to. My theory is that it's either Taldan or Quadiran (from their repeated attempts to manipulate and control Absalom during the era of Excess (2000-2849AD), or from the Archlords of Nex (from the Age of Blades) or else a Chelish siege outpost from the Era of Rising Tides (3541-4136AR). These are still rather too many options, but at least it's a start, and may give me some indication of what to expect.

Bedtime: but just wanted to scribble down the rest of the day. Ezran couldn't open the chest, and says that we need an unlocking spell (which he doesn't have). Not sure what my Mom wanted to hide in there, but it looks like I'll have to go further to get some help. I guess I'll have to sort it out when I get back now, since we're leaving tomorrow. Still haven't told Daddy anything about that. I guess the canny bastard has figured something's going on, but I'll leave him a note saying that I'll be back by Sunday. 

Meanwhile, Giorgos is completely infatuated with Kyra, from what I can tell. It's like the thing with Annabelle all over again. I've promised that I'll invite her for dinner sometime and arrange the table in his favor (she doesn't see too impressed with him from what I can tell, but then, I wouldn't be either). In return, he says he has some information on Mom which I would be interested in – something about a 'wardrobe' apparently. No idea what that means, but Giorgos is usually true to his word, in a roundabout fashion. Got to be at Ezran's house at 9am tomorrow, so time to turn in early.

In the corner of the pub – old man with a staff, blue robe. Reading a book with tiny reading glasses. Although it's very busy, there's 3-4 m distance between him and everyone else. Little woman with a golden face and green hair, lying on top of the snow ball – both playing wtih a red ball. 

Persuade Esran to take me on – I'm charming, i speak 4 languages, I'm not bad with a rapier. Kyra speaks up on my behalf – she's good a research. Esran is quite prudish.

ABRIL has misplaced a student! he's a bard Ballanar – sent himto the Cairnlands to check out a tower which got reports. Failed to reply. We have a map now!

2 hours to leave the city – 5-6 hours to reach the closest farmstead from the tower – 1.5 hours from the tower. 

Chest – unopenable!

Wake up – write a message to Esran – 20h30 – drink and helo wtih a mysterious object which is giving me trouble. Kyra and Lili are welcome to join!

Agenda – buy some adventuring stuff (water skin, backpack, apples and crakers and hard cheese, leather bound notebook and pens, potions)

Lirbrary = check out the "stff  I need" book and don't see anything I've missed. Who tried to take over Absalom? (Because I want to know the possible historical choices of the tower we're visitng in the Cairnlands.

The Grand Lodge

Beautiful midsummer day – just finished school a few days ago. Graduated with pretty good marks and we've spent the last few days having farewell parties and graduation ceremonies, etc. Just being happy in the city.

As part f celebrations – travelled around the city and saw pituresque locations like Grand Temple. 

Family's estate – at the top of one of the hills close to the docks. Walled keep – garden wit a well in the iddle. 

Older brothers have already let this morning, because they are working. Father is still at home. Told me that he'd like to have breakfast with me when I'm up and talk to me. 

I will go to Magnimar on the ship. OR become a pathfinder.

My mother used to be a pathfinder!!!!!

Short but productive pathfinder career. Expedition in the Osirion desert to excavate a Mastaba (ancient Eygyptian tomb).

Dear Diary,

 

My mom was a Pathfinder! There – I know that’s just blurting it out, and Madame Scrim would be furious for my lack of decorous style. But she was. A pathfinder, I mean. I can hardly believe it.

 

The last few days have been pretty intense, with all the graduation parties and dinners and stuff. Now I’m not at school any more, the city seems different, like it’s on holiday too. The weather has been beautiful – warm but balmy and with a little breeze. Just perfect.

 

But today, Daddy wanted to talk to me. And you’ll never guess – he KNEW about the fencing lessons! Apparently my rat teacher went and asked if he was ALLOWED to teach me – can you even believe that?! Seigneur Raspin is due for a good shouting at, if you ask me. Mind you, he so Galtian he’d probably just stand there with his lip curled, sniff and turn away, like he does when you miss an easy lunge. Who knows, maybe Daddy knows about that too?

 

Daddy asked me what I wanted to do with my life and if I wanted to go to Magnimar. And then he told me that I was just like Mom and that she used to be a pathfinder, and that a woman called Elisa Petoulengro knew her. And this Elisa Petoulengro was in Absalom – a VENTURE CAPTAIN, even, and a librarian for the Grand Lodge. That’s amazing, right? I can hardly believe it!

 

So, of course, then I headed out of the estate and to the Great Lodge (the rickshaw guy tried to charge me 5 SILVER for the ride – I gave him two – one for each of the balls it took to ask for that price!)

 

I went into the first, building that I’d come to. I can’t believe that I’ve never had an excuse to go there before. It was a massive hall, all richly decorated in different styles together, and with a fountain in the middle. I figured out later that the floor of the hall is a giant map of Golarion and the fountain is the Island of Kortos!

 

I wandered around a little bit, unsure of what to do. I mean – this was the Pathfinder society – everyone here was busy and important. For a while I strolled around a gallery of natural history, filled with amazing creatures represented in skeletal form, painting, and even some stuffed examples. I saw minotaurs and harpies, and all manner of other creatures. It was extraordinary, and I do mean to go back, it that wasn’t going to help me get more information on my mother.

 

Finally, I plucked up some courage and went to a friendly looking group of three people who were chatting in the main hall. I asked directions to the library from an old man, and explained that I was looking for Elisa Petoulengro, who had known my mother. He offered to help me instead and, with the assistance of a woman he called Chevala (she had turquoise gemstones imbued into her arm somehow, and worked some seriously awesome Juju on one of the books – holy hells, I’d love to be able to do that) found my mother’s name. She was a Pathfinder in Osirion! He did a bit more research and found that she had a short but productive Pathfinder Career, and that she was one of the first to explore the Osirion desert. She brought back a disembodied hand from a Mastaba (an ancient Osirion tomb), which has five ironstones imbued into the skin. The old man turned out to also be a venture captain (I met two venture captains in one day!) – a dwarf called Venture Captain Morgim. He talked a bit about the ancient Azlanti technology of ironstones and waystones, but he wouldn’t tell me what they were, and said that there was no information available on them to the public. Another Pathfinder secret, I suppose. There are no written records from Ancient Osirion about ironstones, but if this was the first Pharaoh then he’d probably want to keep that power to himself to wow or wield over his subordinates – whatever power it has.

 

Captain Mogrim went away after a while, and I wandered around the other rooms open to the public. I have an idea forming in my mind. Mogrim said that there are two ways to enter the Pathfinder society. The first is through an entrance exam, and THREE MORE YEARS of study, and then a final test (which is usually a first field commission). The second he called a ‘field promotion’ which is when you just go and do stuff and report it. At the front of the Pathfinder Chronicles it always says “Explore, Report, Cooperate”. I guess if I just follow the motto, I might earn myself a field commission sometime.

 

So, busy with these thoughts, I investigated the rest of the rooms open to the public in this big structure.

 

There are rooms there dedicated to regions: Osirion, Quadira, Katapesh and what used to be the Taldor empire *and is now the Cheliax Empire and Andor); another corridor led off to Nidel, Varisia, the Lands of the Limnore Kings and Nirmanthis. A third corridor led to rooms for Kyonin, the River Kingdoms, Galt, Lasthold, Ustalav and Nimiria. These rooms were full of relics – swords, pots, armour and other artefacts – and were decorated in the regional style of the territory they were representing.

 

After I’d explored all this, I went to speak to Captain Mogrim again, asking him about other areas open to the public. Apparently there are galleries for Garund and Kasman in the building to to east of the entrance, but there aren’t any books available to the public.

With an idea half-formed in my head, I walked to the library. I needed more information before I was ready to go out by myself. I don’t mind admitting that I’ve been spoiled with soft beds and comfortable living – I don’t know how to light a fire, or cook my own food, or how to make a campsite. But these are all things I can learn without too much trouble. I scanned through the massive library catalogue and finally found a general guide to wilderness survival. Locating it, I pulled it out and settled myself at a table.

 

I’ve created a curriculum of things I need to learn before I go for my dry-run expedition.

 

Survival information "Survival Guide"

How to: choose a good campsite, light a fire, pitch a tent, cook a basic meal, fresh water, list of items for adventurers, take care of a pack animal (food, water, basic maintenance, etc)

 

Kortos information geography and history:

- Sites close to the city – history and pre-modern settlers, geographical features, maps

- Adventurers in Kortos and what they have seen

- Pathfinder chronicles – look through the expeditions listed and see what has been done in Kortos

 

I had enough time to scan the wilderness survival guide and start marking down page numbers for further study. I’ll go back tomorrow and do some more. Meanwhile, it was getting late and I was tired and hungry. I walked home around 8.00 and went straight for supper. Daddy says there might be some things of Mom’s somewhere, and Sonya said there was a trunk which she’ll bring up tomorrow.

 

I’ve bathed and I’m ready to sleep now. Tomorrow I’ll go through the trunk, and go ask Captain Adril Hestron some questions tomorrow night (I’ll have to buy him drinks, of course). He’s always boasting he’s got the best knowledge of the siege towers around Absalom, so maybe he’d be able to suggest one to go explore. He’s always taking out initiates, he says (and sometimes “taking” them too, from what I hear.) I bet I could get Jack to come with me, too. It’d be fun, I think.
